What is Staking on The Root Network?

Staking is a process that allows users to participate in Proof-of-Stake blockchain networks, like The Root Network, and earn rewards by locking up their tokens. In the case of The Root Network, ROOT tokens are used for governance and network security via staking.

This guide will explain what staking is, how it works, and how you can get started.

The Root Network (ROOT) is a Layer 1 blockchain designed as a hub for the open metaverse, focusing on interoperability and user experience. It employs a dual-token system with XRP as the default gas token and ROOT for governance, staking, and other core functions. The network supports decentralized applications, digital collectibles, and AI-powered content, aiming to create a seamless and interconnected experience across the metaverse.

Staking is the process of locking up your tokens to participate in The Root Network. By staking your tokens, you help secure the network and earn rewards in return.

When you stake your tokens, you are essentially locking them up in a smart contract. This smart contract will hold your tokens indefinitely, during which you will not be able to access or use them until you decide to unstake.

There is a 28-day unstaking period on The Root Network to support network security. Once the unstaking period is over, you will be able to withdraw your tokens.

As The Root Network uses a unique multi-token gas economy, staking rewards include all tokens used for gas on the network during the cycle.

Gas and network fees are collected during the reward cycle and transferred into The Vortex. In each reward cycle, participants are rewarded with newly minted Vortex tokens (VTX) based on their stake and participation in the network. Participants can then redeem their Vortex tokens for the underlying tokens.

In addition to token rewards generated through network activity, The Root Network has allocated 1.2B ROOT tokens, 10% of the total ROOT supply, for the first 260 weeks as an additional Bootstrap Reward for early participants to be distributed via The Vortex.
